Landscape photography workshops, courses and tuition

Just returned from the Heather photography workshop in the Dales. This is the third one day workshop I've attended with David and I have to say that once again it was very enjoyable and informative. David has an excellent knowledge of the area, and always seems to have a good selection of locations available to suit the conditions and the particular interests of attendees. His passion and enthusiasm for both photography, and the Dales area are contagious. He has inspired me to return and explore on my own, and to learn to see the potential in my own local area. He sees opportunities that most would miss or not consider. I hope some of his enthusiasm and unique way of seeing the landscape will rub off on me. Thanks David. I imagined that on my first workshop it would be mostly showing me how to work the camera and use manual setting, de-mystifying focus, iso and exposure. This was the case but alongside the technical aspects of using a camera I was also getting a lot of information about how to look at landscapes. I had no idea how to see an image. David showed me how to make the best of an area and I came away with an image I now have on my wall. I have been on several trips with David now, from the Yorkshire coast to the Wolds from a hike up the hills to exploring a waterfall. David is patient and knowledgeable, he makes you see in a different way. Generous with his knowledge, and locations. David has helped me see there is much more to learn and he has a passion for the landscape that is infectious. I have learned more in a day with David than I have reading loads of books on landscape photography. I thoroughly enjoyed the Glencoe workshop and spent the 4 days with lovely company. We had some pretty wet weather to contend with but David always found somewhere for us to shoot. I have just returned from a one day workshop in the Yorkshire Dales, where it threw it down and blew a gale all day. Despite this, I had a great time thanks to David Speight, my instructor. David is a very talented photographer, but his knowledge of the subject and calm patience also make him a great teacher. He knows the Yorkshire Dales like the back of his hand and so we were able to switch location several times during the day to make the most of the bad weather. Throughout the day, David made every effort to ensure I met all of my objectives from the workshop, he clearly cares about his clients satisfaction. I left with some great shots, but also with the confidence to go and develop my skills further on my own. Having said that, there is always more to learn and so I will be looking forward to my next workshop with David, maybe during a spell of better weather.

I went on a beginner workshop with David which was taking place in the Yorkshire Dales. I can't recommend David enough for anyone who wants to get into photography more and get more out of their camera. The workshop started with David's in-depth explanation of how cameras work and how to manipulate light, balancing aperture, iso, and shutter speeds. David also explained to us how to use histograms along with a few bits about file formats and good housekeeping for SD cards. Even though I was aware of shutter speeds, iso and aperture, the rest of the day showed me how little I actually knew about my camera. David took us to several spots including big landscapes, waterfalls and even some lovely spots with some lonely trees which provided a good setup for a nice composition. During that time he showed us how to use manual focus and play with depth of field and how to bring more things into focus and have much sharper images. He also had a few tripods that we could borrow and showed us the advantages of using a tripod in landscape photography. Along with that, he answered all of the questions I had on the day and trust me they were a lot. From how to use filters, to how to stitch photos together to create panoramas, to bracketing. I can't cover everything in one review unfortunately, but what I can say is - if you are looking to learn more about photography and you are not sure where to start and you are thinking of signing up for a workshop, definitely book one with David and you won't be disappointed.

I would never have imagined that on a rainy, misty november day I could take photographs in hebden bridge and calderdale, of old mill buildings and waterfalls, that are, to my eyes, stunning!
