I thoroughly enjoyed the Glencoe workshop and spent the 4 days with lovely company. We had some pretty wet weather to contend with but David always found somewhere for us to shoot. I finally learnt how to get the best settings out of my camera. David was very patient and very knowledgeable. The areas he took us to were stunning and I got some stunning photographs. I cant wait until I can do another workshop with him
I’ve just returned from David’s Lake District workshop and can’t thank him enough for his knowledge of the area and the fantastic photographic locations he took us to and for all the tips and techniques he gave me which resulted in many images I am really pleased with. His relaxed and friendly manner made the whole experience a complete joy .
Having just returned from the 3 day Autumn workshop in the Lake District with David and being quite a novice and put at ease very quickly by David. Firstly the accommodation at Lane Head Farm was first class, and I would highly recommend. Even having a couple of damp days you always found some stunning locations, you introduced me to parts of my camera I wouldn’t touch, but now enjoy taking manual pictures, I will keep practising on every opportunity and hope to book again in the near future. Thanking you again for your expertise and friendship through the whole 3 days.
I'm an average guy with pretty basic kit. David showed me how to get better pictures out of it, and how to think better about composition and light. His questionnaire drew out what I specifically wanted, and he made sure I got it without either going over my head or patronising me. As far as I could tell, he managed the same things just as successfully with everyone present, all while making it a pleasant occasion and taking us to some great locations I'd never have found. A brilliant day - I'll be back for more!
I have been on a number of photography workshops with David in the Yorkshire Dales, Yorkshire Wolds and Glencoe which I feel with David’s tuition my photography has greatly improved. David has a in-depth knowledge of the locations we visited which allows you to take some great photos of traditional views and spectacular locations that he has scouted out making your photographs unique. David his an excellent tutor who spends time with all workshop attendees helping where required on the technical aspects of photography for the camera, the use of filters where required etc to the artistic side of photography in composition which he has given me a lot of encouragement and advice. What I particularly like is, his patient when he is working with you and his constructive advice when reviewing your work, David is very flexible whilst you are on workshops and he selects the best locations that can be photographed during the appropriate weather conditions, which can range, big vistas, waterfalls, seascapes, woodlands to more intimate and abstract photographs. He is fully converse with photo editing software such as Lightroom, Adobe camera RAW and Photoshop and he takes time with you to learn photo editing techniques to reflect the mood of the subjects you photographed. I have been very pleased with the images I have photographed on his workshops and he always spends time with you to ensure that you come away from the workshops with photographs you can be proud of along with a set of new skills you can further develop in your own time. I thoroughly recommend David’s workshops to any enthusiastic photographer and I’m and looking forward to attending some more of his workshops in the Lake District, Northumberland Coast and North Wales.
I have attended two workshops and just completed a series of one to one zoom sessions. Invaluable experience for me and I am 100% sure that anyone wanting to progress their photography, at whatever level, can only benefit enormously from time with David. Always attentive, thorough, patient and of course with a wealth of knowledge and expertise it is a real pleasure to learn with David. First class service. Consistently superb! Thanks David.
Hi David, I cant say how much I enjoyed the workshop, even in the wet morning conditions. You are a natural teacher, that is quite a rare skill. The advice was constructive and never judgemental and we both felt that we could ask for help without feeling stupid. I was physically tired after such a long day - don't know how you do it and keep up the enthusiasm when working on consecutive days. I will be coming on some future workshops. Thanks again Lyn
I cannot recommend the beginners photography course with David highly enough, from the ease of booking and payment to communication about the days logistics. Starting with explaining the basics of any DSLR camera to explaining the functions easily on our individual camera types. Demonstrations of equipment and technique was thorough and Davids knowledge and experience in his field are second to none. We were guided through some spectacular scenery and venues to try all sorts of different styles of photography, different subjects, lighting and locations. A full, fun packed immersive day with a professional. I may not have had a clue about my new hobby before I went, but after my workshop I have a good overview of my equipment and the know how to go away and start practicing. Nothing was too much trouble to explain and no question too silly, I ABSOLUTELY loved every minute! I will be back! Thank you David for igniting a new hobby and passion in me! After a long delay due to Covid restrictions, David and I finally got together for a Basics for beginners one to one workshop. I thought I knew how to use a camera, but how wrong I was. I could ramble on about how much I learnt, but if like me, you love taking pictures, but are disappointed with the results, then this workshop is for you. David made me a promise at the start of the day, that by the time my workshop was finished, I would never use the 'Auto' setting again on any camera. He was right. I ended the day with some of the best pictures I have ever taken, and a lot of new knowledge. David is a patient man, and delivers the workshop in a very practical style.
I went on a beginner workshop with David which was taking place in the Yorkshire Dales. I can't recommend David enough for anyone who wants to get into photography more and get more out of their camera. The workshop started with David's in-depth explanation of how cameras work and how to manipulate light, balancing aperture, iso, and shutter speeds. David also explained to us how to use histograms along with a few bits about file formats and good housekeeping for SD cards. Even though I was aware of shutter speeds, iso and aperture, the rest of the day showed me how little I actually knew about my camera. David took us to several spots including big landscapes, waterfalls and even some lovely spots with some lonely trees which provided a good setup for a nice composition. During that time he showed us how to use manual focus and play with depth of field and how to bring more things into focus and have much sharper images. He also had a few tripods that we could borrow and showed us the advantages of using a tripod in landscape photography. Along with that, he answered all of the questions I had on the day and trust me they were a lot. From how to use filters, to how to stitch photos together to create panoramas, to bracketing. I can't cover everything in one review unfortunately, but what I can say is - if you are looking to learn more about photography and you are not sure where to start and you are thinking of signing up for a workshop, definitely book one with David and you won't be disappointed.
I’ve recently been on one of Davids “one to one” courses and I can honestly say it was a superb day. David is a great teacher with masses of knowledge on camera techniques, composition and Photoshop. His character comes through on the day and this sets you at ease so you don’t feel like your being taught, but you are. One last thing, his choice of locations have some spectacular images to capture. I’ll definitely be booking one of his courses in Whitby next year.
