Dear David, Many thanks for two excellent days in the Dales. What I enjoyed was your enthusiasm and real effort in trying to find venues that would ‘work’ in the prevailing conditions. You worked very hard to make it a worthwhile workshop, tirelessly thinking what might work best. Your tutor role was informal but effective and you are the first ‘leader’ I’ve encountered who ever asked his clients whether they would mind if he used his own camera! I’ve failed [to date] to access the RAW files but time has been short - but I’ll be sure to ask for help if I don’t succeed. May the coming weeks bring you great skies and gentle weather.

I have been on a number of photography workshops with David; both on group workshops and on a 1-2-1 basis in Yorkshire, Northumberland and Scotland. David is a very patient and experienced instructor and I have learnt a significant amount about my camera and photography techniques in such a short time; which is testament to David's teaching skills and relaxed style. Whilst on a workshop with David, he will be flexible with locations to ensure that he selects the best locations to match the weather conditions each day, ensuring you can get the best out of your images. I started out as a relative beginner and through attending David's workshops, my photography has improved and I can now say I'm an intermediate photographer in a camera club, entering international competitions. David, Many thanks for organising the week long trip to Scotland. How you manage to organise a dry Scotland with blue skies for a whole week in November is a mystery to me but you achieved it. It is a credit to yourself and the dedication you put into preparing your workshops that for such a distant location you were able to take us to ideal spots in the middle of nowhere to take shots of breath taking scenery in both Glencoe and on the Isle of Eigg. This was my 3rd workshop with you and again I appreciated the knowledge and skills you were able to pass on to all of us (as well as the loan of some of your equipment). Not only was it educational from the photography point of view it was also an excellent weeks holiday - well that's how it felt, tiring but great fun. I'm an average guy with pretty basic kit. David showed me how to get better pictures out of it, and how to think better about composition and light. His questionnaire drew out what I specifically wanted, and he made sure I got it without either going over my head or patronising me. A great day out leading to a lot more confidence! My husband booked the beginners' workshop for me and I was pretty nervous, as well as excited, about it. I shouldn't have worried! David uses a pre-questionnaire to gauge your experience- I joked to friends that the only question I was confident to answer was the one about the camera itself - but it turns out, I was wrong about that as well! So you can understand that I was a total beginner! But after a quick chat and some camera basics, we were off and photographing! We visited great locations, I learned how to put the discussions into action and it was easy to experiment and see the impact of making changes. After lunch, David encouraged me to start experimenting myself with the choice of subjects, which felt great. I came away, with my expectations more than met, some great pictures and the understanding and enthusiasm to take my new hobby to the next stage. Hi David Thanks for the links and attachment. I was with the gang who paid for the day with you today. I showed them the images on my laptop (quickly blended and minimally worked on in Photoshop) and they were very impressed – as am I! They’re the best images I’ve ever deliberately (as opposed to accidentally) achieved. It was a brilliant day as far as I’m concerned (even with the soaking!). I’m going to work on the images in photoshop and then post them online. I’ll definitely send you a link so you can see too what we captured. I don’t know when I’ll get chance though as I’ve been loaded up with lots of work to do today, so it might be a while as I want to take my time over them and experiment with the raw files. Going to the Lake District on a photography workshop on the wettest weekend, was quite an experience. David knowledge of the area, enthusiasm and patience, turn this weekend from a disaster into a brilliant workshop. David drove and drove, avoided areas of floods and searched the sky for spots of light clouds and maybe sunshine, so that we can take some photographs. And we did! Finding the best spot for THE right image and helping with camera setting when needed and any problems we encountered, provided us with some amazing images that otherwise we would have never achieved. First off, David is an extremely talented photographer who produces some wonderful images – just check out his gallery if you haven’t already done so. He is also a top guy, very friendly with a great sense of humour, and someone who really cares about making sure that the clients on his workshops get the very best experience possible. He tailors the tuition to suit everyone’s ability and is extremely generous in sharing his experience and know-how (this is not the case with all photography tutors in my experience). We had a great day around Robin Hoods Bay. David knows his locations intimately and made sure we were in the right spot at the right time. The practical advice was supplemented with examples drawn from his own work to explain principles of composition etc and we even managed to squeeze in a really useful photoshop tutorial over lunch in a cafe overlooking the bay – wonderful! All in all a totally absorbing day which was great fun and has moved my photography skills on in leaps and bounds!

I imagined that on my first workshop it would be mostly showing me how to work the camera and use manual setting, de-mystifying focus, iso and exposure. This was the case but alongside the technical aspects of using a camera I was also getting a lot of information about how to look at landscapes. I had no idea how to see an image. David showed me how to make the best of an area and I came away with an image I now have on my wall. I have been on several trips with David now, from the Yorkshire coast to the Wolds from a hike up the hills to exploring a waterfall. David is patient and knowledgeable, he makes you see in a different way. Generous with his knowledge, and locations. David has helped me see there is much more to learn and he has a passion for the landscape that is infectious. I have learned more in a day with David than I have reading loads of books on landscape photography.
