A couple of weeks ago I was driving down to Holyhead to take the ferry over to Dublin for what would be my fourth time in Ireland. To say that the weather in Ireland can be changeable would be a total understatement! In past years we’ve had rain and storms of all sorts of magnitudes, but there’s usually a patch of decent light just around the corner after all the inclement stuff passes through. This years trip started off really well. We stayed in a comfortable self catering cottage on the Fanad Headland, and this gives us relatively quick access to some brilliant locations, meaning it’s not too much of a drive to reach a good spot for sunrise.
The weather on that first day was almost too nice. There was a pretty good sunrise at Fanad Head, though with low winds the sea was a bit calm for our liking. It seems a bit odd to be wishing for heavy winds while out with the camera. In most of the locations I tend to visit, wind is a real pain and I hate it! Here though, on one of the most northerly points of Ireland, stuck out on a piece of rock jutting into the Atlantic, it’s absolutely essential for injecting some menace and mood into your images. The shot above is from another visit to Fanad, later in the week. The light maybe wasn’t as nice as our earlier attempt, but the dark skies and angry swell of the sea almost made up for it I think.
We started the second day at another nearby location, and our first visit to photograph one of the many spectacular sea arches to be found along The northern headlands section of the Wild Atlantic Way coastal route. This location and Fanad Head are both great locations at either end of the day, and also at different points in the tide. Therefore we usually revisit both these areas again later in the week. This also makes it possible to try out some different compositions as well. The above image was shot on our second morning, and with a high tide. Unfortunately, a bank of cloud was blocking off the best of the light that day.
In comparison, the above two images were shot later in the week, when sunrise coincided with low tide. The image with the boulder (which some of you who were on last years workshop might recognise) is in completely the opposite direction to the view of the arch and I think it makes a worthwhile composition in its own right. We were so lucky that morning to be able to shoot the nuclear, pre-sunrise colours, before quickly turning 180 degrees to capture the first rays of sunlight filtering through and on to the side of the arch. What a morning! One of the difficulties of running a workshop along the coast here, is that some of the very best locations are quite a distance apart. However, they are so good that it’s difficult to leave them out. Malin Head for instance, is stuck out on its own peninsula. It’s probably less than five miles from Fanad Head as the crow flies. Unfortunately, we have to drive and there’s quite a bit of sea that gets in the way. We made the two hour drive to Malin Head on the Thursday (I think), and the weather didn’t look particularly good that day. This has to be one of the most dramatic coastal locations I’ve ever visited though, so I’m not sure it could ever really look boring, even in poor light. As it happened, we were very lucky again. There was a good swell on the sea, which just like last year was battering the sea stacks and swirling around inside the amphitheatre of rock, aptly named ‘Hells Hole’. Just when we thought it couldn’t get much better, the sun started to break through the cloud at sunset. Not quite enough to light up the foreground, but great for adding a bit of interest in the sky over the main stack. Having a whole six days in Ireland works really well. Many of the workshops I see are usually three or four days. Because of the transient nature of the weather here, it’s brilliant that we have enough time to revisit locations if better conditions are present, or have a steadier day (processing images) if the weather is bad. As I also like to learn more about every area I photograph, it also means we can explore the odd new location here and there. I managed to look at another couple of very good areas on this trip, and I can’t wait to return to them again next year. Both locations are sea arches, again, but they are pretty spectacular! The surrounding areas are also full of potential. We had a quick look at the area above in the middle of the day, then visited another location before re-visiting at sunset. Again we were very lucky to get some nice soft light on the sea stack just before sunset. Although I missed the shot due to being blasted by rain showers, one of our group managed to capture a rainbow which formed over the stack for probably no more than a couple of minutes. This was another brilliant evening.

Hi David Thanks for the links and attachment. I was with the gang who paid for the day with you today. I showed them the images on my laptop (quickly blended and minimally worked on in Photoshop) and they were very impressed – as am I! They’re the best images I’ve ever deliberately (as opposed to accidentally) achieved. It was a brilliant day as far as I’m concerned (even with the soaking!). I’m going to work on the images in photoshop and then post them online. I’ll definitely send you a link so you can see too what we captured. I don’t know when I’ll get chance though as I’ve been loaded up with lots of work to do today, so it might be a while as I want to take my time over them and experiment with the raw files. Thank you for a thoroughly enjoyable and enlightening day – I learned lots! All the best Lynne
I had a one to one session with David. Im new to photography and was worried that i would struggle with the lessons. But David really brought it down to my level and by the end of the day I was taking some amazing shots and understanding what was been taught… I can’t thank David enough for the day I had and as soon as I’ve saved some more money i will definitely be booking my second lesson and hopefully go to the coast!!! I cannot recommend this man enough!!! You will not regret any money you spend on a day with him!!! Thank you so much David!!!
Well David, I have found time to sit down and thank you for a great day out at Malham in early February. When I say early I also mean early in the morning. The day was absolutely brilliant. You pitched the day just right for my knowledge. I now have more confidence when using my camera on ‘manual’ mode. If anyone wants a great day out learning about landscape photography, book a day with David. All the best David and I hope to share another day with you in the future
Hi David, I cant say how much I enjoyed the workshop, even in the wet morning conditions. You are a natural teacher, that is quite a rare skill. The advice was constructive and never judgemental and we both felt that we could ask for help without feeling stupid. I was physically tired after such a long day - don't know how you do it and keep up the enthusiasm when working on consecutive days. I will be coming on some future workshops. Thanks again Lyn
I ordered two large mounted prints from David and am thrilled with the quality of the photos and David’s service. The photos arrived carefully packaged and within a week. I had a couple of queries when buying them and he was able to respond to my emails quickly making the service really personal. I have already recommended David’s photographs to friends and I will certainly be back for more prints in the future.
Really enjoyed my day with Dave on the Robin Hoods Bay workshop. Apart from being a good instructor and an enthusiastic coach; he is one of those guys who has the ability to put you at ease as soon as you meet. Dave knows the location well which allowed us to visit a number of different areas during the day. I would recommend a workshop with Dave to everyone.
I’ve recently been on one of Davids “one to one” courses and I can honestly say it was a superb day. David is a great teacher with masses of knowledge on camera techniques, composition and Photoshop. His character comes through on the day and this sets you at ease so you don’t feel like your being taught, but you are. One last thing, his choice of locations have some spectacular images to capture. I’ll definitely be booking one of his courses in Whitby next year.
I thoroughly enjoyed my workshop in Malham with David. He gave me loads of useful tips and advice on composition and getting the most out of my camera. His knowledge of the area is second to none and we visited some fantastic locations I’d never have found on my own. His amiable nature made it a real pleasure to spend the day with him and I’ve come away with so much more confidence and enthusiasm for landscape photography. I would definitely recommend David’s workshops for photographers of all abilities.
Many thanks once again for another excellent couple of days out with you. Your knowledge of the Yorkshire countryside and the best places to take photographs must be unique and unsurpassed. Amazing places so close to the 'Industrial North' and some great pics. Thanks for introducing a couple of techniques new to me that were a great help and which I will go on using. See you next year!
I have been on a number of photography workshops with David in the Yorkshire Dales, Yorkshire Wolds and Glencoe which I feel with David’s tuition my photography has greatly improved. David has a in-depth knowledge of the locations we visited which allows you to take some great photos of traditional views and spectacular locations that he has scouted out making your photographs unique. David his an excellent tutor who spends time with all workshop attendees helping where required on the technical aspects of photography for the camera, the use of filters where required etc to the artistic side of photography in composition which he has given me a lot of encouragement and advice. What I particularly like is, his patient when he is working with you and his constructive advice when reviewing your work, David is very flexible whilst you are on workshops and he selects the best locations that can be photographed during the appropriate weather conditions, which can range, big vistas, waterfalls, seascapes, woodlands to more intimate and abstract photographs. He is fully converse with photo editing software such as Lightroom, Adobe camera RAW and Photoshop and he takes time with you to learn photo editing techniques to reflect the mood of the subjects you photographed. I have been very pleased with the images I have photographed on his workshops and he always spends time with you to ensure that you come away from the workshops with photographs you can be proud of along with a set of new skills you can further develop in your own time. I thoroughly recommend David’s workshops to any enthusiastic photographer and I’m and looking forward to attending some more of his workshops in the Lake District, Northumberland Coast and North Wales.
I have attended two workshops and just completed a series of one to one zoom sessions. Invaluable experience for me and I am 100% sure that anyone wanting to progress their photography, at whatever level, can only benefit enormously from time with David. Always attentive, thorough, patient and of course with a wealth of knowledge and expertise it is a real pleasure to learn with David. First class service. Consistently superb! Thanks David.
