Booked the beginners landscape photography course for my boyfriend and myself for his birthday. Learnt a staggering amount in our day workshop... more than we learnt several months reading books and struggling on our own! Can’t wait to put our new learning into action! Thanks so much David! Just had a tremendous day in Northumberland... Howick, Alnwick Castle and Holy Island. Expert tutoring from a real professional who shares his extensive knowledge fully. Opened my eyes to the potential that my camera has to offer, which hitherto had been a mystery. Tremendous. Just need to fix a date for another workshop.

I’ve recently been on one of Davids “one to one” courses and I can honestly say it was a superb day. David is a great teacher with masses of knowledge on camera techniques, composition and Photoshop. His character comes through on the day and this sets you at ease so you don’t feel like your being taught, but you are. One last thing, his choice of locations have some spectacular images to capture. I’ll definitely be booking one of his courses in Whitby next year.
My wife and I had a 1-to-1 workshop with David last week. As novices we learnt so much about how to use our camera, as well as the opportunity to take some very interesting photos in and around North Yorkshire, coast and inland. The day flew by and after the day together we couldn't wait to put some of our new found skills into action. Everything makes so much more sense now. Excellent value for money, stress free and David went the extra mile to make sure we got the best out of the day. Thank you!
Just returned from a Northumberland workshop tired but having learnt a huge amount. David's style was relaxed but he had plenty of time for one to one for us all. We got up early and went to just the right places to capture spectacular sunrises and sunsets. I returned with armfuls of superb images and a desire to do more. We even covered some non-landscape activities which were different and have widened my interest base.
I went on a beginner workshop with David which was taking place in the Yorkshire Dales. I can't recommend David enough for anyone who wants to get into photography more and get more out of their camera. The workshop started with David's in-depth explanation of how cameras work and how to manipulate light, balancing aperture, iso, and shutter speeds. David also explained to us how to use histograms along with a few bits about file formats and good housekeeping for SD cards. Even though I was aware of shutter speeds, iso and aperture, the rest of the day showed me how little I actually knew about my camera. David took us to several spots including big landscapes, waterfalls and even some lovely spots with some lonely trees which provided a good setup for a nice composition. During that time he showed us how to use manual focus and play with depth of field and how to bring more things into focus and have much sharper images. He also had a few tripods that we could borrow and showed us the advantages of using a tripod in landscape photography. Along with that, he answered all of the questions I had on the day and trust me they were a lot. From how to use filters, to how to stitch photos together to create panoramas, to bracketing. I can't cover everything in one review unfortunately, but what I can say is - if you are looking to learn more about photography and you are not sure where to start and you are thinking of signing up for a workshop, definitely book one with David and you won't be disappointed.
I joined David on his Whitby workshop. A great day, I came away feeling far more confident about photography in general. I hope to do another day with David in the future.
David organised two one-to-one workshops for me. Both were well planned and adaptive to my needs. I found that the workshops focussed on helping me to improve as a photographer rather than just taking me to commonly photographed spots. David was also very helpful around the workshops; for example helped me when my Sony broke days before a workshop and the manufacturer was not being helpful. I was able to also try the Canon system that he has during the workshop to get an idea (swapped systems after the Sony fiasco!). Thank you so much for being so helpful with these!
June 2021. I have just returned from my first 1-2-1 tuition workshop with David in Swaledale. I thoroughly enjoyed the day, the advice, information and guidance offered by David in his relaxed, unpretentious manner. We visited some beautiful locations, and he left me with tips on where else to visit, which I did the following day with a new-found confidence in my photography. Thanks to the tuition I feel that I am now in charge of the camera, rather than it in charge of what I take. I am now about to book further workshops to develop my skills further.
I have just returned from a one day workshop in the Yorkshire Dales, where it threw it down and blew a gale all day. Despite this, I had a great time thanks to David Speight, my instructor. David is a very talented photographer, but his knowledge of the subject and calm patience also make him a great teacher. He knows the Yorkshire Dales like the back of his hand and so we were able to switch location several times during the day to make the most of the bad weather. Throughout the day, David made every effort to ensure I met all of my objectives from the workshop, he clearly cares about his clients satisfaction. I left with some great shots, but also with the confidence to go and develop my skills further on my own. Having said that, there is always more to learn and so I will be looking forward to my next workshop with David, maybe during a spell of better weather.
